Intended audience: Community Health Workers

Description: 

This course is specifically designed to provide participants with knowledge and skills to better support people struggling with addiction.  Emphasis will be placed on ways in which people in helping professions can move beyond simply not stigmatizing people who use drugs by adopting communication strategies to challenge and reduce stigma. Participants will become familiar behind some of the brain science about addiction, explore personal and societal biases about people with substance use disorder (SUD).  

Understanding Addiction help participants:  

  • Increase knowledge about the societal impact of substance use disorder 
  • Recognize biological, psychological, and environmental risk factors 
  • Understand addiction as a disease vs a moral failing 
  • Address myths, stereotypes and stigma  
  • Learn cultural perspectives on substance use 
  • Identify strategies to assist clients with SUD
